News / Officially Announcing The Really Big Tournament #4!
« on: November 22, 2018, 05:08:45 pm »
OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCING:

THE REALLY BIG TOURNAMENT #4!

hosted by Rails Barlow

The Basics:

FORMAT: TEAM 4v4, SWISS FORMAT TO PLAYOFF BRACKET

CONFIG: ZoneMod 1.9.3 (release soon)

PRIZE POOL: $200 WITH MORE TO COME (early stages)

RULESET: Pending
ASSISTANT TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS: Pending

1. This is a Four (or five, depending on team signups) Round Swiss Style tournament, which will then proceed to a finals bracket of the top 8 teams to determine the champion (similar to the RBT1 and RBT3, plus e-FPS tournaments).

2. This server format for the tournament shall be HOME AND AWAY SERVERS for INTERNATIONAL MATCHES. The teams can determine whether or not to play one or two games for a given match; if the teams cannot agree, the admin team will decide.

3. This tournament will be played on ZoneMod with a match by match option for both teams to play another config if they so choose. If both teams choose to do so, they can play their match on another config (uMod, Acemod, Metafogl, Witch Party) instead of ZoneMod; both teams must agree to play another config for their match. If either team wants to play ZoneMod, the match MUST be played on ZoneMod. Anyone who's ever wanted to play jockey races for a tournament match, NOW IS YOUR TIME. NOTE: The option for mutual agreement on a different config only applies for the Swiss stages of the tournament. The Finals Bracket will be exclusively ZoneMod.

IMPORTANT: Team rosters will be limited to SIX PLAYERS. For the duration of the Swiss portion of the tournament, NO roster changes will be allowed following signups. Teams who qualify for the elimination bracket will be allowed to make roster alterations but ONLY for 1) removig inactive players and/or 2) adding players to their roster who have NOT played in the tournament as part of another team's roster. Classic rules.

SIGNUPS OPEN: MONDAY, DECEMBER 10th, 2018,
SIGNUPS CLOSE: MONDAY, DECEMBER 31st, 2018
TOURNAMENT GOES LIVE: MONDAY, JANUARY 7th, 2019

The map pool for the tournament is as follows:

Following the conclusion of signups, designated team captains will be expected to post match results in the proper threads in the group. Official announcements for streams, tournament progress, and the VOD archive will be available here; tournament admins will be the group admins; moderators will be casters, streamers, team captains, and other imporant tournament people.

RBT Tournaments / Hot Mess Tournament Round 1 -- Dark Carnival!
« on: September 25, 2016, 09:43:05 am »
Hello, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to the Hot Mess Tournament 2016! We are officially LIVE!!!

Round 1

Round starts: Monday, September 26th, 2016 (but if you wanna play your games today, go right ahead, for this week only).
Round ends: Sunday, October 2nd 2016 (Midnight PT)

Rules

Pairings

REMINDER: This is a home/away tournament. Some of the flags on the pairings are inaccurate due to a longstanding bug in the software. Click here for an easily searchable list of teams (ctrl + f) with captain denotation, and then go here if you need to find their specific steam profiles.

NOTES: Team Millenium (5) and Team Fear (24) were not paired due to their objectively verifiable history of suspicious behavior (aka their use of 'competitive advantages'). Evidence was presented to the administrative team in the week between signups and the tournament going live; if either reps from team Millenium (most notably their captain) or Team Fear would like to discuss/defend their history, please feel free to add the 'Hot Mess Tournament Complaint Department's Chairman', mister Fig Newtons.

Post match schedules, results, or questions related to Round 1 in this thread. General tournament questions should go in the main thread.

Results must be posted in this thread with a screenshot before the round end deadline.
Results are not to be sent over steam IM.

EVEN IF YOUR GAME IS STREAMED,
YOU MUST POST YOUR RESULTS IN THIS THREAD;
failure to do so will result in a forfeit loss.

GOOD LUCK AND HAVE FUN!

RBT Tournaments / CASTERS/STREAMERS FOR HOT MESS TOURNEY WANTED!
« on: September 20, 2016, 02:53:22 pm »
Hello all!

With the Hot Mess Tournament scheduled to kick off this upcoming Sunday (9/25), the time has come to arrange streamers/casters for the tournament. We already have a couple of streamers interested in the tournament (who have already contacted the administration team), but if you're interested in streamcasting a game, feel free to add either myself or Volarium.

On another note, if you'd like to cast matches, we need you, too! Even if you're brand new and would like to try it out, the streamcasters already interested in the tournament are open to new voices who want to give casting a shot. If you're interested, add either myself or Volarium, and then we can connect you with a streamer. Jumping in -- with some preparation, of course! -- is the best way to go, in my experience. I personally will not be casting this tournament.

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to the start of a great tournament!

RBT Tournaments / Hot Mess Tournament 2016 Official Signup Thread
« on: September 04, 2016, 08:02:42 pm »
REGISTRATION CLOSED!

DO NOT EDIT YOUR POSTS IN THIS THREAD EVER. FOR ANY REASON.

BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN

SIGNUPS START: September 4th, 2016

SIGNUPS END: September 18th, 2016 (midnight Pacific Time)

EVERYONE INTERESTED IN SIGNING UP: The Map Pool for the Tournament is as follows (with one campaign/week instead of a spliced campaign system)

Note to all teams currently signed up and those who are going to sign up after this post: this will be a tournament played on full campaigns (i.e. Dark Carnival 1-5) each week consisting of regular and custom maps, instead of splicing maps together to constitute a full campaign. The map pool is as follows, in no particular order:

Hard Rain: Downpour
Dead Center
The Parish
Dark Carnival
Detour Ahead
Swamp Fever
The Passifice
Death Toll

Thanks for signing up!

Necessary components for registration:

1. Team Name.

2. Team Location + preferred server used in matches.

3. Full roster, including: no more than six players, team captain denotation, steam community profile links AND SteamID identification for each player on the roster.

4. For specific questions regarding player eligibility, please contact ONLY our tournament administrators.

5. Please read all rules regarding the tournament. This is an assumption of good faith that the captains know the details of the rules as they have been posted; while they are fairly standard and have been mostly replicated from the previous tournament rulesets, there have been changes made to fit the needs of the Hot Mess Tournament, as there are in any tournament preparation.

Thank you!

RBT Tournaments / Hot Mess Tourney 2016: Map Format/Pool
« on: September 04, 2016, 07:52:46 pm »
Hello community. For the upcoming Hot Mess Tournament for fall 2016, an option has been proposed among the admins to alter the traditional format of gameplay for a major tournament.

Instead of playing a full campaign each week (Dark Carnival, Hard Rain) there would, instead, for all weeks of Swiss play (5) and the elimination bracket (3) on the home/away server format, be combinations of maps to constitute campaign equivalents. For example, in week 1, the map-set would be released at the start of the week as Dark Carnival 3, Hard Rain 2, Death Toll 4, Parish 2, and Detour Ahead 2. All teams would play the standard two games for home and away on that map combination. Then, at the start of week 2, the next map set would be announced, and this would continue sequentially for the duration of the tournament.

Please vote your preference above; the admin team is seeking feedback on which option the community would like to see in the tournament, so please also post below with your opinions on the benefits/detriments of each option. Please keep all feedback civil! The poll will expire a week before signups end and the final decision will be based off of feedback and resulting administrative discussion so that a final map pool is either released (or not) a week prior to signups ending.

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

« on: August 15, 2016, 09:14:56 am »
Hello ladies and gentlemen! Apologies for me posting this a day or two late. Prior to the end of Bleedout, I got together and talked with a few other community people to talk about the community's direction after Bleedout's success -- well, the answer is here!

METHODOLOGY AND FEEDBACK (PLEASE READ)

In discussing the community's next step after Bleedout, it made sense to pair one of the community's most active pug groups with the ensuing tournament; Volarium and the Hotmess admins showed a lot of enthusiasm towards the project, thank you to them for their encouragement and support. Before the tournament goes live, if there are any alterations or suggestions to ANY of the information posted above, this post serves as both an announcement but also a chance for anyone in the community to post feedback and/or discuss with the admin team about what the community would like to see. There's just about three weeks before signups go live, so you've got three weeks to reply to this thread. All of the information I've posted here is only semi-concrete because, as we know, stuff can happen in the weeks leading up to a tournament (see: RBT2). Bottom line: NEXT TOURNEY IS HERE, START SCRIMMING, GET YO TEAMS, GET HYPED.

General / General RBT Closing Ceremony/Bitching
« on: November 25, 2015, 05:24:19 pm »
Hello community. First, sorry to Visor for posting this here, but since this has to do with general comments pertaining to multiple areas of this forum, I just put this here. Feel free to move it to wherever. I didn't put it in the RBT3 forum because while its the 'closing ceremony' post, it talks about a lot of stuff not related to the tournament.

Thanks all for a great tournament! I'm happy to say that it ended and that the finals were played. The turnout was great and the spectator enthusiasm was fantastic. Shoutout to my fellow admins, everyone who streamed and casted games (KissMe and Xbye especially), all server owners, everyone who donates to this community, Sir for sponsoring the prize pool, all the teams who played and everyone who had fun watching. I have a few thoughts I wanted to mention now that the tournament is over, mostly to try and make the process of competitive l4d2 a bit easier in the future (although trust me, I get it, this is more of an entertainment venture than an e-sport, I understand)

1) Can we change the "Poll of the Now" on this website to be more current/pertinent? It's still stuck on the RBT2 winning thing. The chance to make it relevant to RBT3 has passed, but its just outdated.

2) If the config on which most of NA plays its games (aka ProMod) could be fixed to where A: people don't have their guns dropped in tank fights to where matches are impacted (see: AG vs Whatevaz in the semis (twice)) and B: something is done to correct chest bumps (which foiled a tricap in the same game cuz lol) and also C: people don't get stuck on random-ass props just because they moved the wrong way (see: round 6 chopper situation in proximity vs intoxic where disco got stuck cuz #l4d2) that would be nice. The amount of matches the game/config helped decide, based less on skill and more because something stupid happened that shouldn'tve, was somewhat disturbing from an adminning point of view, especially when stuff like the gun bug and the chest bumps was claimed to be 'fixed'.

3) Granted, playing the grand finals in and of itself is an achievement since no other major NA based tournament has done that this year for a bevy of reasons, but dear lord it should not have been the 4 hour odyssey it was. Really, it wasn't the admins' fault or the teams faults' as a whole, but is there any way to prevent any one of the shitstorm of issues which occurred? This game is like 7 years old, this should be a lot easier than it is at this point to get a finals match played without 3 server crashes, a lightning-bolt kickban (more on that in a second) forcing a server change, and a bunch of other issues.

4) Is there any way to get an actual, concrete anti-cheat system? I know there's been a huge commotion recently regarding alleged (proven?) smurfing and the like, but I've honestly looked at it with ambivalence due to the fact that there seems to be a trend of people playing who either have hacked/might be hacking, that gray area there's always been. I think a huge reason l4d2 shouldn't be taken seriously is due to the fact any time any case of hacking comes out, the verdict relies on 1) demos and speccing and 2) how much people want to witch hunt. Can we not institute a way to get a definite answer to any of this, or is the excuse of "the community is so small, if you banned everyone sketchy there'd be no user base!" just going to be the answer? If it is, I don't care, I just want to know.

Again, these are just a few observations I made after adminning this tourney. I'm way past the point of making long-ass statements about how people are toxic (reason: I learned l4d2 comp is inherently toxic, some are just better at hiding it), or how this community should be held to standards of conduct seen in other communities (reason: we can't even finish half our tournaments), and I'm not interested in writing essays (reason: I don't care), I just thought these questions would be relevant because somehow, some way, someone somewhere is still going to care about this game, and someone might still until l4d3 hits or everyone walks the fuck away, which I'd bet is never going to happen.

Thoughts? Thanks once more for an outstanding tournament, I mean that; this 'bitching' from me are just a few improvements I think could be easily made/might make everyone's life a bit simpler in this dumbass game. I'm actually quite happy with how the community showed itself this tournament, there's just a lot we COULD do to be better (in my opinion, of course).

Semi-Finals!

Round starts: Saturday, November 7th, 2015
Round ends: Sunday, November 15th 2015 (Midnight PT)

Final Group Stage Standings!
Elimination Bracket

Thank you everyone for a very entertaining Quarter-Finals round! Commiserations to Melee Runners, Fuckboys, Proximity, and ECLIP5E, congrats to the four teams who have made it this far! The four teams left to compete for the two spots in the Grand Finals are:

Whatevaz (5) vs Animosity Gaming ( 8 )

Helheim (2) vs Alerion (3)

Best of luck to all teams, both these matches should be very good games!

THE HOME/AWAY SYSTEM SHALL NOT BE NEEDED DURING THE SEMI FINALS. Both semi-final matches are between two teams containing a majority of players from the same continent (NA vs NA and EU vs EU, respectively); therefore, the last match of RBT3 which shall require the home/away system shall be the Grand Finals.

**REMINDER: ABSOLUTELY NO RINGERS (meaning ANYONE not from the finalized team rosters) ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED IN ANY OF THE ELIMINATION STAGES -- GET FOUR FROM YOUR ROSTER OR NONE AT ALL!**

Hello. I'm posting this on here just to see if anyone might be interested -- I'm playing with some cool people on a version of team Abraxas for the European cct thing. Right now our roster/starting 4 are myself, EsToOpi, Luckydog32, and CENTER. If anyone is looking to hop on a roster/would be available to have fun and watch us kill ourselves repeatedly on custom maps, then feel free to hit me up! I believe the deadline for roster edits is either the end of today or tomorrow.

Quarter Finals

Round starts: Monday, October 26th, 2015
Round ends: Sunday, November 1st 2015 (Midnight PT)

Final Group Stage Standings!
Elimination Bracket
MAP DOWNLOAD LINK

Thank you everyone for a great six rounds of Swiss play in RBT3; the last round of Swiss found eight teams separating themselves from the rest to now reach a single game elimination playoff bracket (linked above); the quarter-finals pairings are:

Melee Runners (1) vs Animosity Gaming ( 8 )

Fuckboys (4) vs Whatevaz (5)

Helheim (2) vs We met on eHarmony (7)

Alerion (3) vs Proximity (6)

DIRECTIONS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF HOME AND AWAY SYSTEM

As stated in the RBT3 Announcement, the internationally based teams (Helheim and Alerion) now have the option of instituting the home and away system for their remaining games; in the home and away system, two games are played -- one on a (in this case) North American server, and one on a European server. The scores from each game are then added together, and whichever team scores the most points combined in both individual games is the winner of the best of 1 match. At any point, if a team wants to not play the 2nd game in a series, they have the right, but it will result in the forfeiture of the match to their opponents. If the two teams together can't agree on which two servers are being used, then the admins reserve the right to choose the two servers for the games to be played on, to the closest achievable balance, based off of our discretion. If a match between Helheim and Alerion occurs and both teams are using their EU based rosters, then there will only be the need for a single game played on a European server (as it was in the group stage).

Good luck and have fun to all! The admins truly appreciate all the teams in the tournament for a fantastic showing thusfar, and of course thank you to all of those who have streamed games, casted games, all the server admins for their support and generosity, and all of those who have enjoyed the tournament so far! Also, credit to eTronic for making this fantastic representation of how great a game l4d2 is:

With that said, good luck and have fun -- let the elims begin!

**REMINDER: ABSOLUTELY NO RINGERS (meaning ANYONE not from the finalized team rosters) ARE ALLOWED TO BE USED IN ANY OF THE ELIMINATION STAGES -- GET FOUR FROM YOUR ROSTER OR NONE AT ALL!**
