Haunted Forest Development Pack

Haunted Forest is decently balanced, but I thought I would manage a running "dev pack" that I/we can continuously develop together (through trial and error).  The end goal for this is to balance Haunted Forest a bit more and to hopefully have our work merged into ProMod officially (whenever ProMod updates come out).

*This pack is only stripper config files and a altered mapinfo.txt.  All files that replace that in Promod 4.2.2. come with ".bak" copies of their original form so that server admins can revert the files easily.

Changes:
Map 1: The Forest
  • Removed rock cluster in the right path where the path splits.  This was originally added (by me) in CCT1, but this will reduce 1 choke point from the map.
Map 2: The Steeple
  • Added additional piping near the ladder choke in the beginning of the map.  The ladder is now nerfed comparable to the sewer choke on Parish 3.
  • Added wooden boards leading to the mountain top above the broken SI ladder just before the alarm car area.  This should add more spawn capabilities and may lead to interesting rock tanks.  Note: The props added here are not enjoyable to walk on, but they're something.
  • Removed all hittables from the map except for the alarm car.
Map 3: The Mansion
  • Reduced Map Distance Score from 700 to 600
  • A burst of horde no longer spawns with the piano tank
  • Promod tank is forced to spawn after the 65% mark as to reward teams who kill the piano tank
Map 4: Escape
  • No more early Promod tanks will spawn
  • All brown shotguns and unsilenced uzis are replaced with chrome shotguns and silenced uzis
  • The pile of rocks near the railings that enables deathpulls over the railings has been removed.  This was originally added (by me) in CCT1 to prevent death pulls.

General / Valve presenting next gen graphics engine in March

Would they present next gen graphics with an existing game? or a new game / newly compiled game? Probably the latter.

They probably wouldn't use Dota because there isn't much more graphically to get out of it.  TF2 is designed to be cartoony.  Portal seems to have a lot of flat textures so probably wouldn't benefit much from a graphical overhaul.  CS, L4D, and Half Life all could though.

Historically valve has presented graphics engines using various versions of Half Life.

They have a guy from the Frostbite Engine (Battlefield) and a guy from the Unreal Engine listed too... but two developers from valve.  Maybe they'll just show off some remastered battlefield game or something :/

TBH, this isn't really a game show as much as a group of game developers sharing ideas and teaching some things..  doesn't seem like they'd do any kind of reveal of anything at it :/

I'm retired from stripper.  There are a few things that I felt I wanted to do to the more popular custom campaigns that I think we would all agree with that don't seem terribly difficult for Jacob or NF to fix if they have any spare time.

Take it or leave it :)  These are just suggestions that I thought would be simple.

Haunted Forest:
Map 2:
General Idea: Give survivors less incentive to run back to the church to fight every tank before 65%.  It's boring and usually ends in a wipe anyway.  Survivors tend to do this because there are too many hittables the tank can push onto them in the open areas.
- Remove the hittable log just before you approach the picnic table and fire barrel with the ammo pickup --allows for more pushing.
- Remove all (or all but 1) hittable from the area just before entering the backyard with the swingset --allows for less pulling back.
- Fix the SI ladder that just isn't quite tall enough to reach the top of the mountain (by all the hittables) so the tank can rock maybe.

Map 3:
- Remove the horde that spawns with the piano tank.  It has always seemed fairly inconsistent and more annoying than fun.  It leads to a pretty good amount of wipes.


Carried Off:
Map 2:
General Idea: Make more survivable and give Survivors less incentive to run the tank all the way back to the safe room area for any tank before 55% (It's a long map).
- I initially put an extra "shelf" prop on top of the shelves in the warehouse to prevent people from jumping over the shelves (#CCT1).  This is still there and it's blocking an SI ladder and survivors can still jump over it anyway  :-X  Remove that prop.
- Remove the hittable forklifts in the warehouse.
- Replace the 2 alarmed cars towards the end of the map with non-alarmed cars ... or just remove entirely.

Map 3:
General Idea: Make more survivable and [therefore] more interesting to watch
- Block most (if not all) the death charge spots during the event -- especially the first area.
- Disable the alarm car in the playground

Detour Ahead:
General Idea: A few tweaks that would go a long way.
Map 2:
- Find and replace most of the hittables with non-hittable cars.

Map 3:
- Add encaging railings around the choke to the rooftop in the beginning.  I wish survivors didn't have to be worried about really anything going wrong here.

Map 4:
- Fix the train choke. See if you can allow the survivors to just get on top of the train and drop onto the tracks... or just encage the ladder choke completely to avoid deaths.

Streaming & Casting / Who should stream CCT3 matches

I didn't have the energy to read through the thread regarding this topic last night, so I just felt like I should say a few words about it:

We should be able to all agree that Kissme's stream played a huge part in the communities revival over the course of the past 3 tournaments (watchl4d, ast2, rbt). Watchl4d.com is cool and all, but i still think the amount of advertising and work Kissme put into his stream itself actually had a bigger impact on the success of the watchl4d tournament.  For me at least, it's to the point where the "kissmeplox" stream on watchl4d.com has an iconic presence (as fluffy as that sounds, thats how i feel).

That being said, I'm sorry to the other streamers, but I do think Kissme should have some precedence here.  I personally think the following rules should apply:
 - I think, generally, if Kissme wants to stream a match, he should get to, and other streamers should back down out of the understanding of what i layed out above and what psim mentioned in regards to representing our community.
 - I think if Kissme wants to be nice and pass up a match slot for another streamer, that's totally cool obviously.
 - If the teams in a match prefer a different streamer than Kissme, I think Kissme should back down.
 - If a streamer has organized a stream time / match time a few days ahead of time, and Kissme catches wind of it at the last second and tries to take over,  I don't think thats a good reason to allow Kissme to take over the stream in that case.
 - Obviously if Kissme isn't planning on streaming a match, there is no issue.  First come first serve.

Nothing about this is personal to anyone.

Also, yes, I think it brings a sense of "unprofessionalness" when there are multiple people streaming a single match, so lets not have that happen.

On another [serious] note:  Should we have a calendar of events on watchl4d.com where streamers can designate themselves for events and/or create events?  I can't say how quickly I'll get that done, but it might be useful.

I'm assuming most of the community that once came to watchl4d.com has probably trickled away by now, but just wanted to inform you all of a small update (might still be buggy).

http://www.watchl4d.com now has tabs for recent broadcasts and recently created highlights.

I've already enjoyed waking up in the morning and taking a peek at the broadcasts that went live after I went to bed... otherwise it'd require quit a bit of clicking on twitch to get the same effect.

Highlights and Recent Broadcasts currently only supports Twitch channels.

Enjoy.  As usual, you can leave feedback if you'd like.  It's not perfect, but it's something.

Left 4 Dead 2 / Can we move back to 30tick?

I don't know if moving back to 30 tick is really what I'm getting at here (although I'd like that).  But, considering I'm going to be co-admining a tournament in about a week, I'd like to hear some opinions on how calls should be made. 

We've all seen cases where people get launched 100 feet into the air because they were common hopping... or I guess when they accidentally fall on a common's head and get instant incapped.. or killed.   What should be the call when this happens to someone in a tournament?  User error?  That seems to be the way everyone likes it.  Keep it simple.  No restarts.

I wasn't even common hopping nor do I even see a common in the clip.  It looks like the server just decided to slay me basically.   This made me pretty mad, but it's even more frusterating that people lean towards calling it "user error" and the game is decided on a game glitch.

On a similar note:  The last tournament match I played, I got two tanks stuck.  Both tanks were slayed and no one cared.  User error.

If that's how we want to play, I'm actually ok with it.  I just don't want any complaints when I'm an admin 1 week from now and it happens to you.  I like consistency.

Also keep in mind.  The instance in the clip is me just walking down an escalator and getting launched into the air somewhat randomly.  I do think this is different than a tank purposely punching someone and them flying into an area where their team cannot reach.  At least in the latter case, the tank intentionally punched someone and valve-physics decided where the person landed.

Basically, I've seen almost zero sympathy for getting "glitched" and I suddenly feel like I've been too considerate in previous tournaments and wanted to hear some opinions.
