TRS's Lost L4D Campaign
« on: November 05, 2016, 12:22:52 pm »
Turtle Rock studios just released their L4D1 campaign 'Dam It'.

https://talk.turtlerockstudios.com/t/trss-lost-l4d-campaign/106720

It looks pretty sick and includes two survival maps.  I know there was another campaign called Dam It, but not sure if it's the same one.  It looks different from the other Dam It, so I assume there's no correlation.  There's still some unfinished textures and such, but maybe it'll play well still.

Maybe someone will make it a L4D2 port :)

Just made some interesting discoveries.

There's unused entities for items called the "Heavy Shotgun" and "Heavy Rifle". Note that these ARENT the tier 2 weapons. So these would have been brand new weapons, probably to complement the heavy machine gun from the Passing / Sacrifice.

Another thing I've noticed is the presence of L4D2 props. This suggests that it was made concurrently or even after L4D2's release. Might be mistaken with this though.

Lots of new entities. Entities to detect players in various states, such as being pounced. A new entity called "moving inferno" on the bombed out area on map 2; Would've likely been moving flames and fire. One called "logic_designer_finale". Likely a new type of finale? The finale area is indeed quite small, implying survivors would have to do something to keep it proceeding...

The finale would have had a "survivor bot" spawn with the rescue vehicle. Perhaps like the L4D1 survivors that help you in L4D2's The Sacrifice.

The maps are terribly unoptimized, but I won't hold them to this :P

Several brand new mechanics that sound really cool. Areas where an event is triggered if a Smoker is killed there (interesting versus implications). A bridge that collapses if you get pounced on it or a boomer explodes. An area where crouch walking gives you better vision and line of sight than walking normally. An event on map 2 that encourages splitting up: One person covers from a guard tower as others proceed through a horde infested trench. Map 3 has several large doors that close behind you. If you get trapped behind the closed doors, you're dead.

Would've loved to see this completed.

Also note that the survival maps are DIFFERENT from The Dam campaign. So there's 5 new maps in total.

(stealth bump, this should get more attention tbh)

Some mappers are working on finishing this map. Can't wait.

I'm definitely going to use some of the new props like the RV in future maps.

Turtle Rock Studios devs play through The Dam and discuss the plans and new mechanics they had in mind for the campaign -- including a new finale type with 4 (!!) Tanks

Interesting, looks like it would've been an awful map for versus though considering it was so open. (Like, sure, it was unfinished, but eh)

Yeah, the finale looks like it would've been brutal and probably impossible in versus. Other maps didn't seem so bad to me, especially with the new mechanics like being unable to kill a special infected or you'll set off a horde.

Has anyone ever checked the stringtables of The Dam's BSPs? There's hidden information in there that I think we missed. A while back I realized I can check the "string table dictionaries" that are packed in BSPs to get a general idea of the files that the maps would have had running with it by showing their file directories.

The survival maps that are included with the campaign don't have anything special in them. I'm assuming these maps were completely finished; they had the Xbox 360 stringtables in the BSPs as if they were ready to ship (though I can't be too sure). These were likely finished before The Dam, due to the presence of data in the campaign map stringtables that aren't present in these survival maps.

But, what I wanted to share was the mentioning of a (special?) infected called "queen".
In The Dam's 3 campaign maps, their stringtables make references to scripts and model directories of the "heavy shotgun" and "heavy rifle" we already know about. However, I was intrigued to see references of the following file directories:

  • "scripts/weapon_queen_claw.txt"
  • "models/infected/queen.mdl"

Surprising to see that not only were new weapons planned with this campaign, but also a new infected type. Anyone have any guesses what this "queen" might have been?

It really do be like that sometimes.
