Do not release ProMod sources

Release of ProMod sources will bring more bad than good.

I have put some thought into that. If sources will be released quality and standardisation of ProMod will be lost over quantity of half baked ProMod spin-offs.
I mean, any average monkey could setup a dedicated servers with modified ProMod and tell that it is genuine.
Will this lead to admin abuse and paid server-side cheats and more bugs?
This action probably will put an end to ProMod and game in general...

What do you guys think about this?

Maybe implement some validation scheme to see in game if ProMod binaries are genuine? Checking SHA1 and maintaining a base of valid SHA1 hashes would do.

I don't think your dystopian view will come to fruition, most people lack the knowledge to know how to change plugins in a malicious way and the people who do know how are more likely to be interested in making useful changes. If someone wants to make a malicious plugin, not having source code won't really prevent them from writing one.

Spin off configs aren't a bad idea, its good to try new things, there's a very real chance there is a very good idea that would improve l4d2 and nobody has made it yet or other "fun" configs, in the same line as witch party / random, that are still looking to be made.

lastly try and make a different config and get people to play it. If isn't not ProMod most people won't touch it.

That really ends the conversation. As long as binaries are being distributed, sharing the sources is required by applicable law.

Not to mention:

1) This scene isn't that big anymore. I don't think there's much to worried about in terms of "genuine promod".
2) I'm pretty sure when it comes to any tournaments hosted here, we'll know if it's "genuine promod".
